Growers protest against water shortage

By Our Correspondent

DADU, Aug 30: A large number of small growers of taluka Johi took out a protest rally on Saturday against the shortage of irrigation water at tail-end waterways coming from Johi branch.

The protesters, marching on different roads and streets, reached outside Johi Press Club where they staged a demonstration.

They were led by Mir Mohammad Leghari and Ghulam Qadir.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Leghari said that tail-end of Chhini, Noonari, Pahore, Chejani waterways had completely dried up.

He said due to acute shortage of irrigation water, the growers were not able to cultivate paddy on more than 50,000 acres of land in taluka Johi.

Mr Qadir said irrigation officials were selling water to big and influential landlords and the small growers were not getting their due share of water.

He said the farmers were protesting against the shortage of water for the past 35 days but irrigation officials had failed to supply their due share of water.

The deceased was identified as Mohammad Khan Chahwan, 20, son of Nazeer Ahmed Chahwan. The injured were taken to Civil Hospital Dadu.
