Zardari asked not to contest poll

RAWALPINDI, Aug 29: Senior Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader and former MPA Agha Riazul Islam on Friday advised the party’s chairman, Asif Ali Zardari, not to contest presidential election and suggested that Faryal Talpur was the most suitable candidate for the post of president.

Speaking at a press conference here, the PPP leader said Asif Zardari should unite the party first in order to avoid any possible split within it, arguing that the post of president was non-partisan.

“After becoming president, Asif Zardari would not be able to run the party affairs,” he said.

Mr Islam suggested that Faryal Talpur would run the affairs of the presidency smoothly.“I think Asif Zardari and Nawaz Sharif should confront the challenges faced by the country and not confine themselves to the power corridors. Nawaz Sharif should show flexibility otherwise it would ruin his political career,” Mr Islam said. — Reporter
