Sindh, Police, Wapda and Punjab win netball contests

By Shazia Hasan

KARACHI, Aug 26: The five matches played on the second day of the 8th National Men’s Netball Championship 2008, being held in collaboration with Pakistan Sports Trust (PST), Sindh Netball Association (SNA) and CDGK at the City Sports Complex on Tuesday, saw Sindh, Police, Wapda and Punjab emerge the victors.

Sindh remained unbeaten when they triumphed against Navy and NWFP. Their first match with Navy was won 24-19 with Goal Shooter (GS) Hafiz scoring 13 and Goal Attack Shaz getting 11. Meanwhile, GA Shahryar (11 goals) and GS Ghulam Mustafa (eight goals) replied for Navy.

Sindh’s other match, the day’s fifth and last encounter saw them winning by a 25-16 margin from NWFP. GS Hafiz brought in 22 goals while Samad, another GA, contributed three.

After the first session, which had Sindh on 12 and NWFP on seven, it looked like NWFP might make a comeback into the game when they quickened the pace to make nine goals in succession but Sindh caught up with them soon enough to not let the game go out of hand and contributed 13 more. Meanwhile, NWFP’s weak shooting cost them the match.

Still they performed better than their earlier match where they were thrashed by Wapda 39-5. Wapda’s GA Akhtar scored 23 goals with partner GS Furqan adding 16.

All of NWFP’s five were scored by their GA Zeeshan. But the player who deserves special mention in the NWFP squad was their goalkeeper Adil who failed to stop the 39 goals from happening.

The day’s other two matches saw Police beating Islamabad 26-7 and Punjab getting the better of Balochistan 20-9.

Shooter Wahid (18) and attacker Zahid (eight) scored for Police and GA Mohsin (four) and Farhan (three) replied for Islamabad.

For Punjab, the lanky GS Shahzad scored 12 goals and GA Zubair eight. Balochistan’s nine came through GS Zulfiqar (five) and GA Malik (four).

For his brilliant play and no misses when shooting baskets, Shahzad, later, was also awarded Rs1,000 by Intizar Haider, one of the spectators present on the occasion.
