Cilic outlasts favourite Fish to win first title

NEW HAVEN (Connecticut), Aug 24: Croatian teenager Marin Cilic outlasted home favourite Mardy Fish 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 on Saturday to win the ATP event in New Haven.

In a high-quality match, the 19-year-old world No 31 clinched victory after one hour, 54 minutes to earn his first career title.

A break in the opening game gave sixth seed Cilic the first set but his eighth-seeded opponent hit back well to level the match.

However, Cilic was always the more solid from the baseline and after breaking in the third and seventh games, he served out for an impressive victory in the final warm-up event for the US Open.

Meanwhile, unseeded Danish teenager Caroline Wozniacki upset top seed Anna Chakvetadze of Russia 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 to win the WTA event.

The 18-year-old produced a mature performance, wearing down the Russian in one hour 53 minutes to win her second career title, just three weeks after her first.

An aggressive Chakvetadze looked the likely winner as she eased through the first set but as Wozniacki lifted her game, the mistakes began to flow from the Russian.

The Dane broke in the 10th game of the second set to level the match and romped through the final set to give herself the perfect tonic going into the US Open, which starts on Monday.—Reuters
