Pak Edition looking for a hat-trick at LRC
By Aftab Gilani
LAHORE, Aug 23: The chestnut Pak Edition, one of the best three-year-old colts, bids to add another win to his impressive double triumph to complete a hat-trick when the 16th day/night Lahore Summer Meeting gets underway at the flood-lit Racecourse on Sunday evening.
The son of Dubai Edition out-of-Twichey, Pak Edition is contesting in the Landhi Plate, a class four handicap race to be gone over the sprinting distance of 1,200 metres.
The colt had already won two races in a row dictating a sensible gallop but against a mediocre company of sprinters. This time he is pitched against a few real classic thoroughbreds, who, have not shown form or are appearing on the course after a long lay off. Mythical, Zanjeer and Cut Throat may fight for the places.
This will be the sixth and last race of the day.
Pick Of The Day, Lucky Cat and Magic Queen look good in the fifth and supporting event, the Karachi Plate class V, Division I to be contested over 1,100 metres.
The bay filly Pick Of The Day ran a good second to Secret Memories, who was better on classification at the distance of 1,000 metres. She should make amends and win the race with the distance increased to 1,100 metres. Her main rival could be the filly Lucky Cat, who was placed third, two-and-a-half lengths behind her. The riders on both the fillies will matter a lot in this race.
High Jet, Diamond Sky and Bold Act are prominent by their past performances in the fourth race. The chestnut colt High Jet was placed third in the Aug Cup behind Majestic Desert and Emperor. He should have the better of the other 11 opponents to win this time.
Four-year-old bay filly Bold Act has come down in weighing scales for not putting up a performance expected of her. Bold Act, the daughter of Mansai out-of-Avita, has won three races and been placed twice during the last season but so far she has disappointed her connections in this season.
The three-year-old filly from Bahri out-of-Cheacheapeau, Philogyny, who was beaten by Sapna in a suspicious manner on Aug 16 should make amends this time and win the third race, the Hyderabad Plate, class VI, division I run over the 1,000 metres distance.
Race goers were stunned to see such a highly-bred filly running so pathetically and beaten by two lengths from the out-of-form Sapna. The filly runs in the colours of the Lahore Race Club (LRC) steward Syed Parvaiz Hussain.
Maybe her defeat was due to a lack of training or proper feeding otherwise an 8-to-100 favourite filly from a very good bloodline would not have slithered to put up such a dismal show baffling everyone on the Racecourse even today. One punter had backed the filly for an amount of rupees three lac, and one rupees one lac taking into account her bloodline and the running colours. Heart, Al Ain and Blue Fire may fight for the places.
The first and second events comprise horses from stables known for their inconsistency in performance and those owned by bookmakers directly or indirectly. Betting on such animals is fraught with losses when the high pedigree animals bow out suspiciously. One should keep away and just watch what is going on.
In the first race, there are eight runners, five owned by bookmakers, and their agents and they are all on chance.
Suleman Love is the faster one among them all with Great Rythym, Basant Mayla and Scarlet Empress as challengers.
The second race has the second largest number of 16 runners. Royal Deal, Striker, Dream Memories and Sun Downer are the speedy ones of them all. If nothing goes wrong, Royal Deal should pick up the spoils. The filly Royal Deal was beaten by Harry Can Run on Aug 17 and even on that performance she is a winner when given a fair deal because royal deals are always a trap.
Three races will be contested over 1,000 metres, two 1,100 metres and one over 1,200 metres. The first race will go under starter’s order at 5.30pm.
