Boxer slams fans for booing British anthem

BEIJING, Aug 23: Olympic champion James DeGale slammed fans for booing the British national anthem and traded verbal blows with Cuba’s Emilio Correa after claiming middleweight gold on Saturday.

DeGale said the pro-Cuba crowd had shown ‘disrespect’ during the medal ceremony and showed journalists a mark on his chest which he said was a bite.

“That’s disrespect. I don’t know where they’re going with that,” DeGale said of the booing.

“But listen, I’ve got the gold medal, I made history and it doesn’t matter.”

Correa denied biting DeGale after the first-round incident which cost him two points — the eventual margin of victory.—AFP
