LAHORE, Aug 23: Wapda is considering various options for installation of power turbines on tunnel four of Tarbela Dam in a bid to fully tap the potential of the reservoir.
This was said by Wapda Chairman Shakil Durrani here on Saturday. He said the extension project would add another 960MW to the existing capacity of 3,478MW. Electricity generation from Tarbela Hydel Power Station touched the figure of 3,682MW on Saturday – six per cent more than its installed capacity – due to higher water level of the lake.
He said the reservoir was filled to its maximum i.e. 1,550 feet above sea level on Saturday which is a good sign for irrigation and power generation.
The chairman was briefed about the salient features of the Tarbela extension project.
Earlier, the chairman visited the dam, spillways and power house. He distributed shields and certificates among officials of the power house for their good performance.
He also visited the hatchery wherein mahasher, a rare specie of fish, is being bred now-a-days. The chairman also planted a tree on the project.
