Policeman dies in Peshawar rocket attack

Bureau Report

PESHAWAR, Aug 22: A constable was killed in a rocket attack on the Badhber police station here on Friday.

Police said constable Zahir Shah of Bakhshi Pul area was killed and constable Shaukat of Shabqadar and a non-commissioned officer of the Frontier Constabulary, Habibullah, were injured when the police station came under intense attack from different directions.

An official said the rockets had been fired at about 15 minutes’ interval. He said the militants had been regularly targeting the station where heavy contingents of Frontier Constabulary, police and Frontier Corps were deployed.

In another incident, constable Israr of Ormar village was killed when he tried to stop the kidnapping of an industrialist. A passerby, Alamzeb of Sher Garh, was also killed and another constable was injured in firing by the alleged kidnappers.

Police blocked roads in the area after receiving a message that the owner of a pharmaceutical company had been kidnapped from Hayatabad.

The two policemen who were on a motorbike saw the car of the industrialist going towards the city and signalled it to stop at a traffic signal near the Michani Gate police station. The suspected kidnappers opened fire, killing and injuring the policemen and the passerby, and escaped when police followed them. They left the industrialist and his car near Bakhshi Pul on Charsadda Road.

According to sources, Tehkal police have taken into custody a servant of the industrialist who was with him at that time.

The Hayatabad Industrialists’ Association has announced a compensation of Rs200,000 for the family of constable Israr, a reward of Rs100,000 for the Hayatabad ASP and Rs50,000 for the area’s SHO.
