Rally for President from minorities

LAHORE, Aug 22: A rally was held here on Friday to press for the election of a minority representative as the next president.

Christian men, women and children participated in the rally organised by the Human Liberation Commission of Pakistan.

The rally started from the Commission Office on Davis Road and the participants marched to the Lahore Press Club carrying banners and placards on which they had written their demand.

Addressing the rally, commission secretary-general Aslam Pervaiz Sahotra and former adviser to chief minister Peter Gill said Pakistan’s original Constitution did not bar any non-Muslim from holding key offices like president, prime minister and chief of the army staff.

They said the discriminatory provision had been inserted in the Constitution later on which was a violation of the rights of minorities.

They pointed out that Pakistan’s neighbouring country India had set the tradition of honouring the minorities by electing Dr Abul Kalam as president. — Reporter
