Waqas to meet Abhishek in ITF Juniors quarter-finals

ISLAMABAD, Aug 20: Mohammad Waqas Malik (Pakistan), Saurabh Singh (India), Shantanu Rajput (India) and S. V. Abhishek (India) qualified for the quarter-finals in the second leg of the ITF Pakistan International Junior Tennis Championship played at the PTF Tennis Complex on Wednesday.
In the day’s first fixture, Mohammad Waqas Malik defeated compatriot Heera Ashiq in a thrilling three set match.
Heera was leading 5-3 and 30-love in the final set but Waqas displayed good volley at the net and not only levelled the score 5-all but also won the final set 7-5.
Waqas will meet second seed Abhishek (India) in the quarter-finals.
Shantanu Rajput (India) struggled hard to a defeat Shikhar Kapur (India) in three sets match. Saurabh Singh (India), winner of first leg of ITF Junior International Ranking tournament, outplayed Punn Bodhidatta (Thailand) in straight sets 6-3,7-5.
Second-seeded Abhishek (India), beat Samir Iftikhar (Pakistan) 6-3, 6-2. All the quarter-finals matches will start on Thursday.
In the girls’ singles event, Riddhi Hegde (India), Luksika Kumkhum (Thailand), Vaniya Dangwal (Indian) and Augustine Benito (Spain) moved into the quarter-finals winning their fixtures.
Riddhi (India) got a walkover against his compatriot, also the top seed of the tournament, Sharmada Balu.
Fifth seeded Kumkhum (Thailand) was in good form as she won her match against Manya Nagpal (India) without conceding a single game in both sets. Augustine Benito (Spain) hammered Meheq Khokhar (Pakistan) without any resistance in straight sets 6-0, 6-1. Seventh seed Vaniya Dangwal (India) eliminated her opponent Mametgliyeva Maya 6-3, 6-0.
Sarah Mahboob will face second seed Tarimela while Natasha Afridi will face fourth seeded Shweta Rana in the quarter-finals on Thursday.
