RAWALPINDI, Aug 15: An anti-terrorism court (ATC) here on Friday handed over six suspected terrorists to New Town police for six more days after they sought their custody to extract further information about their accomplices.

ATC-II Judge Sakhi Mohammad Kahot accepted the submission of New Town police and awarded them six days physical remand of Shafiqur Rehman, a resident of Mardan; Mohammad Mazharul Haq, a resident of Islamabad; Niaz Ahmed, a resident of Rawalpindi; Syed Abdul Majid, Syed Abdul Saboor and Syed Abdul Basit, all three residents of Lahore.

New Town police said the six men were arrested on July 1 from the area behind Rawalpindi Arts Council on a tip-off. Three suicide vests, five different kinds of detonators and other explosives were also seized from Niaz, Mazhar and Shafiq.

The suspects were planning to carry out attacks on important personalities in the country, the police claimed.

They are also suspected to have had played a role in the suicide attack on November 24 last year when a bomber rammed his explosive-laden van into a bus packed with security personnel at the gate of an intelligence establishment’s compound known as Hamza Camp (old Ojhri Camp) near Faizabad. As many as 17 people were killed in the attack.

Meanwhile an additional district and sessions judge (ASJ) awarded one-year rigorous imprisonment to a man found carrying narcotics and imposed Rs1,000 fine on him. In case of non-payment, he would have to undergo 15 days extra jail.

ASJ Mustafa Tanveer found Munir Ahmed guilty of carrying 1.02kg on charas. He was arrested by Civil Lines police along with the narcotics in October last year.
