KARACHI, Aug 10: The owner-trainer pair of Mohammad Yousuf Khan and Mohammad Aslam Khan earned a lion’s share by pulling off a treble as three-year-old chestnut colt Remy Martin lived up to his top billing in the Gymkhana race meeting at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday.

The duo turned out to be the pick of the day by capturing three races in a card of seven. The winners were Spanzer, Daruwala and Afroze Jehan.

Spanzer, a 10-year-old bay mare, who was joint favourite with filly Princess Zara, overcame a long run of bad patch by imposing maiden victory to land the opener. The two-and-a-half lengths victory over Princess Zara came in the 19th attempt. She was piloted home by Rehan Ahmed.

They were followed by bay Racing Leader and bay mare Serpantine.

In the next, 10-year-old long shot Daruwala sprang a surprise when he toppled favourite mare Raj Kumari by three-quarter-of-a length with rider Abdul Mutlib in the saddle. Raj Kumari was promoted to division IV of class VII after edging Spanzer in the last run.

Rider Wasim completed the feat galloping seven-year-old mare Afroze Jehan to a facile three lengths victory over The Ghazan Prince in the concluding race which was also the feature event.

Earlier, the field was reduced to five runners after the withdrawl of Tyre Jee.

Jockey M. Nasir rode home a back-to-back double to the cheer of racing fraternity. First he stormed fancied three-year-old colt Remy Martin to an impressive 11 lengths victory over filly Leopard Of Arab in the fifth and then steered three-year-old filly Baby John to 10 lengths victory over Manan Prince in the sixth. Both the winners were favourites.

Another favourite that obliged punters was 10-year-old bay mare Queen Of Kinjher who edged mare Princess Rozi by two-and-a-half lengths with jockey Mohammad Essa astride to make it two on the trot.

Outsider Lucky Gem pulled off the second upset of the day beating favourite filly Friendly Fire by half-a-length to claim the fourth race.

The next Gymkhana race meeting will be held on Aug 14 (Thursday).
