Inquiry into murder of TV cameraman resumed

By Our Correspondent

LARKANA, Aug 10: Police have resumed a probe into the murder of Munir Sangi, a cameraman of a private TV channel, on directives of the chief minister and arrested the medical officer of Chandka Medical College Hospital, Dr Akhtar Dayo, and police inspector Safdar Abbasi, sources close to the probe revealed on Sunday.

The sources said that police had kept Dr Dayo at the Taluka police station and the police inspector at CIA Centre. Munir was killed on May 29, 2006, while covering a clash between two tribes.

Larkana DPO Sultan Khwaja confirmed Dr Dayo’s arrest and said police obtained his remand on a daily basis. Police had, however, not yet announced the arrest of the inspector Safdar Abbasi, the sources said.

There were reports the complainant in the case had softened stance towards the inspector who had made contacts with the aggrieved family and the police were avoiding to announced his arrest to be able to lay hands on other accused indirectly involved in the case, the sources said.

Mujeeb Sangi, the complainant, said that the Sindh home department had moved a summary on April 2, 2007 to the chief minister with findings of a judicial inquiry conducted by additional district and sessions judge Manazir Hussain Zaidi.

The inquiry’s terms of reference were to probe and ascertain the circumstances and causes leading to Munir’s death, fix responsibility and recommend action against responsible persons directly or indirectly involved in the murder.

The provincial home secretary had said in a letter to the provincial police officer on April 30, 2008, that the investigation officer had held Abdul Karim alias Adloo Unnar, Mullan Madad Unnar and an unidentified man directly responsible for and involved in committing Munir’s murder.

The investigation officer also accused the then Sindh minister Altaf Unnar, senior medical officer CMCH Dr Akhtar Ali Dayo, then DPO Irfan Ali Baloch, Abdul Karim Khoso, then superintendent of investigation police Muhamemd Yusif Ridd, then TPO of Saddar Allah Juriyo Khokhar, then DSP of investigation Safdar Abbasi, then SHO of Taluka Irfan Ali Baloch, then Taluka supervising inspector of investigation Mohammed Ayaz Khero of being indirectly involved in the murder.
