Pakistan may host international football event soon
By Imran Ali Teepu
ISLAMABAD, Aug 8: A delegation of the Italian-Pakistan Chamber of Commerce & Industry (IPCCI) has come up with the idea of organising an international football tournament in Pakistan in February-March of next year by involving football teams from Brazil, Italy and South Korea.
The proposal was forwarded by Mr Ettore Marzocchi, president IPCCI, who called on the acting Secretary of Sports Anwar Khan on Friday.
While speaking to Dawn, Anwar Khan said that the “National teams of Brazil, Italy and South Korea will be participating in the event, which would go on to increase the level of the game and people’s interest in it.
“Modalities regarding the holding of a successful international event in the country are yet to be decided,” Anwar Khan added.
Pakistan is currently ranked at No 168 along with Philippines in the FIFA world ranking table.
However, the football team of Italy is at No 3, Brazil at No 6 and South Korea at No 53.
Italy is also the current FIFA World Cup champion.
“The upcoming review meeting for the international event is scheduled to be held on August 11 and it will be attended by officials from the Pakistan Sports Board, Ministry of Interior, Foreign Affairs, Information & Broadcasting and provincial (Punjab) government,” he concluded.
