MQM unlikely to oppose Musharraf

By Azfar-ul-Ashfaque

KARACHI, Aug 7: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement is unlikely to support the move to impeach President Pervez Musharraf because it believes that the issue has nothing to do with the problems faced by the masses.

The Pakistan People’s Party did not consult the MQM before announcing the plan. The MQM has 25 members in the National Assembly and six in the Senate.

Sources told Dawn that MQM would devise its strategy in a meeting scheduled late on Thursday night simultaneously in London and Karachi.

MQM chief Altaf Hussain is scheduled to address a gathering in Clifton on Friday evening and it is expected that he will announce the party’s line of action.

The sources said that MQM, which is part of the opposition in the National Assembly and the Senate, would decide whether its legislators would defend President Musharraf or stay neutral.

A statement issued before the Asif-Nawaz press conference quoted Mr Hussain as saying that major political parties were not paying attention to the problems being faced by the common man, focusing on impeachment instead.
