Two Russian walkers fail dope tests

MOSCOW, Aug 5: Two Russian walkers, who were named as members of the Olympic squad, failed recent dope tests and are now set to miss the Beijing Games, a Russian athletics federation source said here on Tuesday.

“Valery Borchin and Vladimir Kanaikin both failed to pass a recent dope test and are unlikely to compete at Beijing,” the source said upon condition of anonymity. “Alexei Voevodin, who was not included in the Olympic team, also failed to pass testing.”

The athletes’ coach Voktor Chegin confirmed the information later on Thursday saying the samples that were given by the walkers on April 20 showed the presence of the banned substance EPO.—AFP
