Gibbs recalled for ODI series

LONDON, Aug 5: Herschelle Gibbs has been included in South Africa’s 15-man squad for the one-day series and Twenty20 International against England.

Gibbs’ international future looked in doubt after he was left out of the Test side for the tour to England, but the batsman has been named in the limited-overs squad along with Dale Steyn, who was ruled out of this week’s fourth Test with a thumb injury.

The Proteas play a Twenty20 international against England at Chester-Le-Street on Aug 20, with the first of five one-dayers at Headingley on Aug 22.

“The squad is made up of the players who have done so well for us over the past year and we have every confidence that they will regain the No 1 ranking on the ODI standings from Australia,” convener of selectors Joubert Strydom said.

“The only player who is no longer part of the mix is Charl Langeveldt who is no longer available.

“We have included Hashim Amla as the 15th player in the squad because of the heavy workload that Graeme Smith has had to carry and the injuries he has suffered recently.”

Squad: Graeme Smith (captain), Hashim Amla, Johan Botha, Mark Boucher, A.B. de Villiers, Jean-Paul Duminy, Herschelle Gibbs, Jacques Kallis, Albie Morkel, Morne Morkel, Andre Nel, Makhaya Ntini, Justin Ontong, Vernon Philander, Dale Steyn.—AFP
