Sheikh Hasina’s parole extended

DHAKA: Bangladesh extended the parole of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for a month so she can receive more medical treatment in the United States, a government statement said on Tuesday.

“The parole has been extended until Sept 7 following a petition by her husband Dr Wazed Miah,” the statement said.

Hasina was paroled for eight weeks on June 11 after ear and eye ailments she was suffering became acute. She flew to New York the following morning for treatment. Her parole had been due to expire on Thursday.

Hasina was arrested by the army-backed interim government in July last year on charges of graft and misuse of power while she was prime minister from 1996 to 2001. Unofficial results from local elections on Monday showed that followers of Hasina had won almost all the posts contested.—Reuters
