LAHORE, Aug 4: Fancied chestnut colt Pak Edition crowned a magnificent weekend with an easy success during the day/night Lahore Summer Meeting at the Lahore Racecourse on Sunday.

Ridden by jockey Shakeel Mahmood, the colt owned by Naseeruddin Siddiqui, made all the running to win the 1,000 metres class five contest by five lengths from dark-bay colt Gulf Line with chestnut filly Tropical far away third.

Pak Edition had opened a 30-100 favourite but his odds eased up to 80-100 when Tropical came under heavy betting by her connections. Pak Edition stunned race-fans with his performance to register a second successive win in an array of 13 sprinters. This was the fourth race of the day.

A race later, the fancied 3-1 shot mare Noor, ridden by Shakeel Mahmood, led from the start to win the feature event marred by a tricky performance by the favourite filly Miss Liza, ridden by ace jockey Shahid Rehman.

Noor beat Harry Can View by five lengths while Miss Liza finished third eight lengths further behind leaving the Lahore Race Club (LRC) stewards flabbergasted. The stewards questioned jockey Shahid Rehman and filly’s trainer Haji Fazal Hadi showing them the race-video in which Miss Liza was seen yelling with an open mouth in the early part of the race. Taking a lenient view the stewards ordered an inquiry in to the matter and named stipendiary steward A. Hameed to conduct inquiry. They suspended Shahid till the completion of inquiry.

Talking to Dawn Haji Fazal Hadi said Shahid did not ride the filly according to his instructions. “I had told him to take a good jump and then hold her for the final attack in the last 200 metres.”

The surprised owner Malik Hamid Ali Noon, who is also LRC steward, said in the past the filly had always been taking a flying start but on Sunday was made to run in a totally different style.

Short-odds favourite chestnut colt Blitz found the under-foot going aptly favourable to blitz his way to victory in the second race. Thus he made amends for his two successive defeats earlier. The colt beat Naseeb Apna Apna by three-and-a-half lengths. Trained by Sohail Aziz the colt was partnered by the riding boy Alam Sher.

Jockey Shakeel Mahmood, trainer Abdul Rasheed and riding boy M. Atif found the proceeding going their way when Shakeel scored a treble and the others a double each. Shakeel rode Credit Card, Pak Edition and Noor. Pak Edition and Noor were trained by Abdul Rasheed while M. Atif partnered Dillagi and Cleopatra trained by Mohammad Hanif.

Favourites Blitz, Pak Edition and Cleopatra came to the rescue of punters while Credit Card, Dillagi and Noor were all 3-1 shots in a card of six races.
