Seven die as roofs cave in

SUKKUR, Aug 4: Four children and three women died when roofs of their rain-weakened mud-thatched houses collapsed in different villages of Sukkur, Khairpur and Shikarpur on Monday.

Three of family died and two suffered injuries when roof of their house weakened by three days of heavy rain caved in on them in Lakhi Lalijo village near Saeed Abad in Sukkur early on Monday.

Reports reaching here said that Ms Kamalan, wife of Mithal Jatoi, Ms Bachan, wife of Shaheen Jatoi, and her son Ayaz were killed on the spot and Dilbar and Banho, sons of Mithal Jatoi, were injured. They were moved to Sukkur Civil Hospital.

In Khairpur, a woman and her son were killed on Sunday as the roof of their house collapsed due to heavy rain in Brohi village near Ranipur.

According to details heavy rain hit the area resulting into the deaths of Lal Bibi and her eight-year-old son Qadir Bux mother under the debris of their katcha house. Heavy rain hit Thari Mirwah, Kingri, Ranipur, Piryaloi and others areas late Sunday evening causing most of the destruction in Khairpur district.

Villagers of Kingri taluka led by Wahid Bux Solangi told reporters on Monday that roofs of many katcha houses gave in during heavy rain in Ghulam Ali Shah village, Qadan Machhi, and Dimbo village of Kingri taluka.

They said villagers, along with their families spent the night outside their homes on fears roof collapse. Low lying areas in Khairpur city were submerged in rain water. The date palm orchard owners suffered losses to the tune of lakhs of rupees.

In Shikarpur, Ahmedoo Megh-war, 12, and Deedar Meghwar, 13, were killed when the rain-weakened roof of their house collapsed in Meghwar village near Jamra in the jurisdiction of Lakhi police station early on Monday morning.
