KARACHI, Aug 3: The Hub dam, which supplies 100 million gallons water per day to the city, has received only one-foot rainwater in the current monsoon.

However, Wapda officials deputed there say there is nothing to worry about as the dam’s reservoir has sufficient water to cater to the needs its beneficiaries — Karachi and Lasbella — for the next 14 months.

According to Inamullah Khan, Wapda’s resident engineer at the Hub dam project, the water level at the dam’s reservoir is 324.08 RL (Reservoir Level) and as such it would be sufficient to meet the needs of the two districts till Oct 2009 even if the present supply level of 100mgd and 59mgd, respectively, was maintained.

He was, however, optimistic about a rise in the water level during the remaining period of the monsoon as its huge catchment area, which comprises Dadu district and Kirthar National Park in Sindh and Duraji, Daruna and Shah Noorani in Balochistan, is still heavily overcast. Water supply to both Karachi and Lasbella districts from the sources had first stopped in July 1999.
