ISLAMABAD, Aug 2: Security for the ICC Champions Trophy was reviewed in a meeting at the Ministry of Interior here on Saturday.

The meeting was attended by PCB chief executive officer Shafqat Naghmi, Ministry of Interior officials and ICC security consultants – Nicholas Steyn Associates.

Chief organiser of the Champions Trophy Ahmed Farooq told Dawn that they discussed security for the mega event, scheduled to be held from Sept 11 to 28 in Karachi, Lahore and Rawalpindi.

When asked about security concerns raised by Nicholas Steyn Associates’ representatives, Farooq said, “No concerns were shown by them as we just reviewed overall preparation for the event.”

The ICC has formed an eight-member task force which will be visiting the country this month to review the security arrangements.

The task force was established when the ICC decided to go ahead with the Champions Trophy in Pakistan after New Zealand, South Africa, Australia and England raised concerns about playing in Pakistan.

The chief organiser said, “We have also requested provincial governments to conduct regular meetings for hosting the event in peaceful atmosphere.”

Farooq added they have planned fool proof security for the event.

Regarding Interior Ministry’s support, he said, “The ministry is helping us completely and we are thankful for their support.”
