By Anwar Zuberi
KARACHI, July 30: The Karachi Race Club (KRC), like previous years, has chalked out an elaborate programme to commemorate Independence Day which, among others, envisage three cup races.
According to the prospectus released for the Winter Gymkhana meeting slated for Aug 14 (Thursday) at Karachi Racecourse, the cups include The Kingree Lodge Performance Cup, Independence Day Cup and The Sanghar Cup.
The Kingree Lodge Performance Cup will be restricted for two-year old debutant colts and fillies, to be run over four furlongs.
The Independence Day Cup will be for three-year-old horses and contested for six furlongs.
The Sanghar Cup which serves as a test of endurance will be for four-year-old and above and go through a mile.
Debutant Claim To Fame landed The Kingree Lodge Performance Cup imposing a facile 10 lengths victory over Play Boy last year.
Similarly, The Independence Day Cup ended in a blaze of glory for bay Naseeb who galloped to three-and-a-half lengths victory in a one mile race while filly Sugar Sweet claimed The Sanghar Cup.
“The course is in a perfect condition and cleared following Tuesday’s rainfall,” Syed Ali Akbar Shah Rashdi, deputy secretary of the KRC, confided to Dawn on Wednesday night.
