Minister backs carpet city idea

ISLAMABAD, July 30: Finance Minister Syed Naveed Qamar has appreciated the idea of establishing a carpet city to boost local production for export.

Talking to a delegation of Pakistan Carpet Manufacturers and Exporters Association, led by its chairman Mian Javed-ur-Rehman, here on Wednesday, he said that the government would make all-out efforts to support carpet industry and added that the carpet industry needed to be put in place through an aggressive marketing campaign, targeting overseas market.

He told the delegation that the State Bank of Pakistan and the Federal Board of Revenue would be advised to consider all genuine requests of carpet manufacturers and exporters, focusing on enhanced production and export to the benefit of all stakeholders.

Earlier, the delegation apprised the minister of industry’s contribution in earning foreign exchange through export of value-added products, besides providing jobs to two million people.

The minister was told that a major component of carpet exports comprises handmade carpets, which are considered the best the world over.—APP
