ISLAMABAD, July 25: Chief of the Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani separately called on President Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Friday afternoon.

Military sources said that before calling on the president and the prime minister, Gen Kayani had met heads of the Inter Service Intelligence (ISI) and Military Intelligence (MI), who briefed him on the security situation with special reference to tribal areas.

The COAS is reported to have briefed the president on Thursday meeting with heads of coalition parties.

This COAS, during his third meeting with the president in a week, also briefed him on the situation on western borders following truce with militants and the Hangu operation which was halted by the NWFP government after its objectives had been achieved.

In the meeting with the prime minister, the COAS is reported to have discussed Pakistan’s position on the war on terror ahead of Mr Gilani’s US visit.

They also discussed the outcome of the meeting of leaders of the ruling coalition.

They agreed that Pakistan should impress upon the US that the country was giving top priority to its security and it would safeguard it at all costs.

It was also agreed that the three-pronged strategy adopted by the government had the support of the majority of the people and parliament, which Americans also needed to accept.

The issue of Nato and US troops’ intrusion into Pakistani border areas was also reviewed and it was reiterated that no foreign power would be allowed to enter Pakistan.
