12 faint in crowded lockup

GUJRANWALA, July 23: Twelve prisoners fainted in a judicial lockup here on Wednesday because of suffocation when the police stuffed a judicial lockup meant for 120 prisoners with 450 prisoners.

Police shifted about 450 jail prisoners to the judicial lockup to produce them in different courts the next day. As a result of overcrowding, prisoners including Munir, Saghir, Akram, Aslam, Hafiz and Asghar fainted, while others cried for opening of windows. Later, the fainted prisoners were shifted to another lockup and given first aid.

SUICIDE: An “addict committed suicide” in a jail by slitting his throat with a sharp-edged weapon here on Wednesday.

Civil Lines Police had arrested Riaz Ahmad a few days ago and sent him to the central jail on a judicial remand. He was taken to the district civil hospital after the incident where he died.

PROTEST: Motorcycle rickshaw drivers demonstrated on GT Road and outside the office of the district coordination officer against extortion by influential men and threw the traffic out of gear on Fatumand Chowk on Sialkot Road.

They alleged that the men of a contractor were extorting Rs110 per head from them without any lawful authority and manhandling drivers who refuse to give them the money. The protesting drivers parked their vehicles on Sialkot Road and burnt tyres. As a result, traffic remained suspended for hours. Later, the protesters dispersed peacefully after DCO Pervaiz Ahmad Khan assured them of stern action against the extortionists.

THREE DIE ON ROAD: Three people, two of them brothers, were killed when a car collided with a truck on Sheikhupura Road on Wednesday.

Abdul Jabbar of Naushera Virkan was on his way to Islamabad by his car along with other members of his family. A truck collided with his car near Tetley on Sheikhupura Road and killed Jabbar, his brother Nisar and their cousin Saleem at the scene. Jabbar’s relatives Akram and Shehzad were injured. They were taken to the district hospital in a critical condition. The truck driver fled.

COPS SUMMONED: A sessions judge has summoned three policemen for Thursday (today) after a bailiff recovered an illegally detained elderly man from their custody.

The bailiff appointed by the district and sessions judge raided Sadar police post in Kamoki and recovered the elderly man who was detained there for the last one week.
