KARACHI: Wheel-jam from today

Published July 22, 2008

KARACHI, July 21: Terming the fresh increase in the petroleum products “uncalled for and unjustifiable” amid a sharp reduction in the oil prices in the international market, the National Transport Ittehad, Karachi, has announced a two-day wheel-jam strike starting Tuesday.

NTI Chairman Salim Bangash also warned of continuing the strike for an indefinite period strike if diesel prices were not reduced to Rs44 per litre. The fresh increase has pushed the price up to Rs64.64 a litre.

The NTI, a conglomerate of 18 organisations of transporters, went into an emergency session with Mr Bangash in the chair on Monday. It decided to keep buses, mini-buses, coaches, rickshaws, taxis, yellow cabs and inter-city buses off the road on Tuesday and Wednesday.
