Cop killed, many hurt as jail van overturns

TOBA TEK SINGH, July 19: A police constable died while another constable and about a dozen inmates injured when a prison van overturned on Toba-Chichawatni Road on Saturday.

Reports said a van (TSA-3777) carrying 40 prisoners was on its way to district jail after producing them in Kamalia courts. Some 15km away from here near Lundo canal bridge, the speeding van overturned as a result constable Waqas died on the spot. Constable Abid and 12 prisoners suffered injuries. Abid and seven of the prisoners were shifted to DHQ hospital owing to their critical condition.

LAWYERS: District bar association members observed a complete strike on Saturday to condemn the torture of lawyers by Karachi police and demanded restoration of deposed judges.

They also hoisted a black flag on the bar room.

Addressing a meeting in the bar room, senior lawyers Mian Shoaib Muhammad, Sardar Iqbal Dogar, Mian Abdul Basit, Shahid Iqbal and Rana Anwar announced that decisions of lawyers convention would be implemented by the lawyers of Toba district.

STRIKE: The Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited staff continued strike on the fourth consecutive day on Saturday to oppose the proposed unified pay scale scheme.

They staged a sit-in outside the main PTCL offices throughout the day and also held a meeting which was addressed by employees’ union president Chaudhry Jehangir and other office-bearers who announced that their movement would continue till the acceptance of their demands.
