RAWALPINDI, July 16: An anti-terrorism court here on Wednesday remanded a man allegedly involved in suicide bombing in September last year, in the physical custody of RA Bazaar Police for six days and extended the judicial remand of six suspects of another suicide attack outside the office of a security agency.

ATC-II Judge Sakhi Mohammad Kahot remanded Umer Adil a resident of Islamabad in the police custody for six days although the

SHO R A Bazaar Inspector Sohail Arif had sought ten days remand.

The SHO told the court that the accused was sent to jail on judicial remand on July 2, when he was arrested, for identification parade and now he would be interrogated for the recovery of other people involved in the suicide attack.

According to R A Bazaar police Umer Adil was arrested from Baraf Khan in Tench area on early July 2 morning and two grenades were recovered from him. A case No 399/8 was registered against him under sections 4 and 5 of explosive act, 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) and section 7 of anti terrorism act (ATA).

More importantly police has suspected Umer’s involvement in a suicide attack near General Headquarters (GHQ) on September 4, 2007. Two shopkeepers were killed on the spot and many people in the area were injured after a suicide bomber blew himself up in the R A Bazaar street.

The judge extended the judicial remand of Shafiqur Rehman, Mohammad Mazharul Haq, Niaz Ahmed, Dr Saqib, Syed Abdul Majid, Syed Abdul Saboor and Syed Abdul Basit all three residents of Lahore for six days till July 22.

New Town Police arrested the suspected terrorists on July 1 on a tip-off from the area behind the Rawalpindi Arts Council and recovered besides five different kinds of detonators and other explosive materials, three suicide vests from the custody of Niaz, Mazhar and Shafiq.

Police alleged the suspected terrorists were planning to carry out attacks on important personalities in the country. A case no. 384 was registered on July 1 under sections 4 and 5, 120-B PPC and 7 ATA against the accused.

They are also suspected for their alleged role in the suicide attack on November 24 last year when a bomber rammed his explosive-laden van into a bus packed with security personnel at the gate of an intelligence establishment’s compound, known as Hamza Camp (old Ojhri Camp), near Faizabad.
