Baray Lal comes in first in last race to complete hat-trick

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, July 10: Fancied five-year-old bay horse Baray Lal swept past his nine rivals to win the last race to complete a hat-trick of victories during the day/ night midweek Lahore Gymkhana races at the floodlit Racecourse on a balmy Wednesday evening.

Already Baray Lal had two back-to-back victories to his credit in a total of four outings todate.

Earlier in the afternoon, the provincial metropolis city of Lahore had received heavy rain, which left the Racecourse wet and the atmosphere a bit cool.

Baray Lal ridden by the riding boy Majid Ali held the third position at the start and gradually came to lead with a burst of speed to win by eight lengths from Mah-e-Noor (II) while Black King finished third with Red Carpet fourth. This was the seventh race of the day. Baray Lal is trained by A.B. Malik.

Fancied chestnut horse, Al Ain, trained by Haji Abid Mehmood, registered his second success win on the trot by lifting the feature and fifth event of the day’s card. The half-money favourite beat Bird Fly by seven lengths. So Romantic and Naseeb Apna Apna completed the frame among nine runners.

Only two firm favourites won on the rain-soaked Racecourse, which turned favourable for those horses, who, liked soft going underfoot. The favourites were: Al Aian (50 to 100) in the fifth race and Baray Lal (40 to 100) in the seventh event. The other winners were available at longer odds.

Four to one bay colt, Kiss Of Luck found the underfoot conditions to his liking to win the opener defeating Faizan Choice by over two lengths. Mohammad Siddique owned/trained colt was ridden by Tariq Habib. Favourite Lal Pari ran off the field.

The five to two mare, Muskan leading all the way home beat favourite Pure Power by five lengths in the second race. Pure Power’s running was doubtful as compared to the gelding’s earlier runnings.

Five to two dark-bay mare, Pretty, beat rank outsider Client by a neck at the finishing post to claim the third race. Bagh-o-Bahar came close third. Four to one chance, Sohna Murad strode to a comfortable win in the fourth race. He beat Sherni with favourte Alpha Juliet third, far away.

Long shot chestnut filly, Sona, ran a totally different race winning the last event.

Midway through the proceedings, the race goers held a minute’s silence in mourning of the death of the mother of Lahore Race Club (LRC) chairman, Tariq Aziz. They also offered fateha for the deceased. Tariq Aziz did not attend Wednesday’s races.

All races were contested over 1100m
