Bay Baray Lal on hat-trick at LRC
By Aftab Gilani
LAHORE, July 8: Baray Lal, who put up an outstanding performance and powered clear of his rivals to score two back-to-back victories, will be on the trot to complete a hat-trick of wins during the day/night midweek Lahore Gymkhana races at the flood-lit Racecourse on Wednesday evening.
Having won two races already (on June 4 and 18), the five-year-old bay horse Baray Lal, trained by Haji Abid Mahmood, is now contesting in the seventh and last race of the day, the Sialkot Plate, class VI, division III and IV to go over the sprinting distance of 1,100 metres.
Black King, Jageerdarni, Mah-e-Noor and Romanella are among his opponents.
The five-year-old chestnut horse Al Ain, who made his new season’s debut on July 2, is in fine form to make it a two in-a-row. The filly Sweet Lady and Naseeb Apna Apna are good for places too.
The first race has 10 runners, barring last-minute withdrawals. Of them Lal Pari, Morni and Miss Karina are the prominent ones on form and performances. But none of them have gone over 900 metres and how they fair in an over 1,100 metres race is yet to be seen.
Pure Power, Muskan and Anarkali are the form horses fighting for the spoils in the second race. One of them should be the winner.
Leader’s Wing, Bagh-o-Bahar and Pretty attract attention in the 14 runners’ field for the third race, provided there aren’t any last-minute withdrawals. It should be a close contest between the three. Still, Leader’s Wing seems to have an edge over the others on handicap.
Five-year-old chestnut mare Alpha Juliet is showing consistency and improvement in each running and given the same can happen on Wednesday too, the mare should score his third consecutive win. The mare Sherni and Sohna Murad can finish, second and third. In the sixth race, the mare Rana Choice will be going all out to make amends for her last time’s defeat on July 2. But she is facing speedy sprinters like Little Smile, Little Love and Sona.
A lengthy card of seven races will be decided in the day/night racing with the first race to be held at 5.00pm.
