Govt employees demand increase in rent ceiling

ISLAMABAD, July 6: Recent increase in rent ceiling for the federal government employees has no match with the surging rents of private houses in the federal capital.

The government has announced 10 per cent increase in the rent ceiling to hire residential accommodation for the federal government employees in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Karachi, Lahore, Quetta and Peshawar, which is effective since July 1.

“Rents of private houses in the federal capital have increased manifold but the government has announced only ten percent increase which is not enough cushion,” Mohammad Arshad, a government employee, told this agency.

He said rent ceiling for the employees of BPS 1-2 has been increased from Rs1,750 to Rs1,925, which, he added, hardly addresses the problem of lower grade employees, particularly in Islamabad and Rawalpindi.

Zulfikar Ali, a steno-typist, said employees of grade 11-13 would get only an increase of Rs615 in the federal capital, while, he added, employees of grade 14-16 would receive Rs770. —APP
