PPP remembers ’77 takeover

Dawn Report

KARACHI, July 5: The PPP on Saturday observed Black Day, condemning the overthrow of the government of former prime minister Z.A. Bhutto by Gen Zia.

Seminars and functions were held throughout the country to pay tribute to the PPP’s founding leader and his daughter Benazir Bhutto and condemn the July 5, 1977 coup.

At a convention in Lahore, party leaders endorsed PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari’s decisions and said they were in the best national interests.

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah said at a function in Khairpur that PPP workers had stood by the party despite being politically victimised.

In Peshawar and Quetta, PPP leaders organised similar meetings to mark the day.
