RAWALPINDI, July 2: An anti-terrorism court (ATC) here on Wednesday sent seven suspected terrorists to Adiala jail for 14 days on judicial remand after the SHOs of two police stations submitted to the court that the identification parade of the accused was to be carried out in jail.

Acceding to the submission of SHO R.A. Bazaar police station Inspector Sohail Arif and SHO New Town police station Inspector Asghar Goraya, ATC-II Judge Sakhi Mohammad Kahot sent Umer Adil, Shafiqur Rehman, Mohammad Mazharul Haq alias Ahmed alias Jani, Niaz Ahmed alias Dr Saqib alias Akhtar, Syed Abdul Majid, Syed Abdul Saboor and Syed Abdul Basit to Adiala jail.

According to R.A. Bazaar police, Umer Adil was arrested from Baraf Khan in Tench area on Wednesday morning and two grenades were recovered from him. A case was registered against him under sections 4 and 5 of the explosive act (EA), 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) and section 7 of anti-terrorism act (ATA).

More importantly police suspect Umer of being involved in a suicide attack near the General Headquarters (GHQ) on September 4, 2007. Two shopkeepers were killed and many people were injured when a suicide bomber blew himself up in the R.A. Bazaar street.

A case was registered in this regard under sections 302 (murder), 324 (attempted murder), 420 (cheating and dishonesty), 427 (mischief causing damage to property) 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of PPC, sections 4 and 5 of EA and section 7 of ATA.

New Town police said the six men were arrested from an area behind Rawalpindi Arts Council on Tuesday on a tip-off. Three suicide vests were seized from Niaz, Mazhar and Shafiq besides five detonators and other explosive material.

The suspects were planning to carry out attacks on important personalities in the country. A case was registered on July 1 under sections 4 and 5 EA, 120-B PPC and 7 ATA against the accused.

The six men are also suspected of having had a role in the suicide attack on November 24 last year. A bomber rammed his explosive-laden van into a bus with security personnel on board near Faizabad.

After the attack a case was registered under sections 302 (murder), 324 (attempted murder), 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of PPC, sections 4 and 5 of EA and section 7 of ATA.

Meanwhile ATC-I Judge Chaudhry Habibur Rehman put off the hearing in the case of grenade attack on a Christian hospital in Taxila in 2002 till July 23 after investigators said they had About six female nurses were killed in the hand-grenade attack on the hospital in August 2002. Six men have already been convicted in the case.
