Dr Suddle made IB chief

ISLAMABAD, June 28: The government on Saturday appointed the Inspector-General of Sindh police, Dr Shoaib Suddle, as new Director-General of the Intelligence Bureau (IB).

A notification of his appointment has been issued and he will take over the charge of his new office in a couple of days, a senior official of the interior ministry told Dawn.

Mr Suddle was appointed as the IG Sindh and promoted to grade-22 in April this year and his fresh appointment as IB chief after just three months has raised several questions.

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement had severely criticised the appointment of Dr Suddle as IG Sindh and alleged that he was responsible for extra-judicial killings of scores of its workers during the Karachi operation launched under the then interior minister General Naseerullah Babar in 1995-96.

Dr Shoaib Suddle was DIG Karachi from June 1995 till Nov 1996 when the Benazir Bhutto’s second government was removed.

Dr Suddle was implicated in the killing of Mir Murtaza Bhutto in September 1996. A team of three senior police officers in 1997 had exonerated him from what they concluded was a “bogus murder case”.

Known for his bravery, Dr Suddle has been again given a tough assignment.
