Payment of judges’ salaries challenged

By Nasir Iqbal

ISLAMABAD, June 26: A petition was filed before the Supreme Court on Thursday challenging the payment of seven-month salaries to the deposed judges, including Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, and seeking to initiate a contempt of court case against the individual who had delivered the cheques.

The petitioners prayed that the payment had been made in violation of the judgment of the Supreme Court in the Tikka Iqbal Mohammad Khan case which had validated the actions taken by President Pervez Musharraf during the emergency.

The petition contended that the premier’s discretionary fund was part of the public exchequer and it could only be dispersed on his discretion among the needy.
