KARACHI, June 26: A doctor has been unable to register a FIR of robbery and assault against his father-in-law, a former IG police, and his family, as the police have termed it a ‘family dispute’ and have not registered the case despite the lapse of over a month.

The doctor, Abid Kazim, recently told Dawn that if it was a family dispute, then why did the police register a FIR on the complaint of his wife, who is the step-daughter of a former IG police.

Giving the details of the incident, Dr Abid, who works at the Civil Hospital, said that over a month back, he had a dispute with his wife after which she called her family members, who came along with a couple of police personnel on May 17.

He claimed his in-laws severely beat him up and he, in a bid to save his life, ran away from his Amir Khusrau Road home. He said his in-laws left after some time, taking various equipment, including a laptop computer, mobile phone, watch and cash.

He said that three days later — on May 20 — all of them, accompanied by a police contingent, returned and took away other valuable equipment.

He said he had repeatedly visited the Bahadurabad Police Station to get a FIR registered against his in-laws, but due to their influence the police was not willing to register the report.

Dr Abid said he had approached the IG police, the DIG police and other officials to get his FIR registered, but despite the passage of over a month, his FIR has not been registered as they were using “delaying tactics.” He, however was informed by the IG, when he went to inform him about the happenings, that on the complaint of his wife, a FIR under Sections 504/506 (ii) PPC 337 (1) had been registered against him.

He has urged the government to institute an inquiry into the matter and direct the police concerned to register his FIR.—BD
