Newly-named Velocity changes her luck with swift victory

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, June 23: Fancied filly Velocity stamped her bloodline superiority scoring her maiden victory during the day/night Lahore Summer Meeting at the floodlit Racecourse on Sunday evening.

The 30 to 100 favourite, Velocity, ridden by ace-jockey Shahid Rehman, set the filly go at her own pace to finally beat front-running Love Minister by a length easily.

Naseeb Apna Apna backed for the place, greatly disappointed backers by finishing third while Volcano completed the frame among seven runners.

The change of filly’s name from Aunab to Velocity apparently changed her luck as under the old name she ran off the frame in her two outings, owner Tahir Mahmood must be boasting for it.

Rank outsider filly Richy Dancer won the feature event defeating another long shot filly Alishba by two lengths.

Leading all the way home, unchallenged Richy Dancer kept her immaculate pace to be safely home ahead of five runners.

Favourite filly Pind De Kuri owned by the Lahore Race Club (LRC) ran off the frame.

Mare Noor lived up to the expectations of her backers, who supported her at short odds, winning the supporting and fifth event. She beat Munsaf by about three lengths.

Noor led all the way home on the rails. At one stage Munsaf, ridden by Tariq Habib, came closer to catch her but he shied away, all of sudden going wide on the outer tan. This made Shahid Rehman’s task easier to win on Noor. Had not Munsaf gone wide there would have been a close fight between the two.

Two Jockeys — Shahid Rehman and Abdul Rahim — shared the day’s riding honours bringing home a brace of winners each.

Shahid rode Velocity and Noor in the third and fifth races while Abdul Rahim partnered Faryal and Rough Tough in the second and fourth races respectively.

Race-goers proved the old saying that horse-racing besides being a sports is an addiction when they braved the worst type of muggy weather to see a card of six events gone through during the day/night programme.

All the events were contested over the sprinting distance of 1,000 metres.
