Thaksin faces 12 graft cases

BANGKOK, June 23: An anti-graft body appointed by the generals who toppled former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra said on Monday it has completed investigations into 12 cases against the billionaire’s government. The military accused Thaksin of widespread corruption during his five years in power, and set up the Asset Examination Committee (AEC) to examine the complaints and prepare cases for prosecution.

After 19 months of work, only three cases have made it to court and no convictions have been won. The panel’s mandate expires in one week, raising questions about what would happen to the outstanding cases against Thaksin.

AEC member Kaewsan Atibodhi told Thai television on Monday that nine more investigations were now complete and ready for the courts, and that only one case remains open. —AFP
