Watson shines in tour match win

CAVE HILL (Barbados), June 22: Shane Watson scored 95, as Australia batsmen used a modest attack and the relaxed atmosphere of a day/night limited-overs tour match on Saturday to warm-up for the imminent One-day International series against the West Indies.

Watson smote six fours and four sixes from 85 balls to set-up a crushing 211-run victory for the Australians over the University of the West Indies’ Vice Chancellor’s XI at the Three Ws Oval.

Watson gave West Indies early signs that he could be a difficult customer in the five ODIs to lead Australia to a formidable 337 for six in the stipulated 50 overs.

David Hussey made 55 from 36 balls, stand-in captain Michael Clarke retired out on 53 from 35 balls, and Mike Hussey got 50 from 72 balls.

Kemar Roach was the pick of the Vice Chancellor’s XI bowlers with two for 47 from eight overs.Australia’s bowlers then made sure the visitors had an early night, when they dismissed the Vice Chancellor’s XI for 126 in 33.1 overs.

Nathan Bracken claimed three wickets for 25 from his eight overs.

Summarised scores:

AUSTRALIA 337-6 in 50 overs (S. Watson 95, D. Hussey 55, M. Clarke 53, M. Hussey 50; Roach 2-47): UWI VICE CHANCELLOR’S XI 126 in 33.1 overs (D. Ramdin 43; N. Bracken 3-25, D. Hussey 2-4, M. Johnson 2-24).—AFP
