Aisam falls in singles qualifying round

LONDON, June 22: Pakistan’s Aisam-ul-Haq has been knocked out of the Wimbledon men’s singles qualifying round after losing the second-round match 7-6, 6-3 against Poland’s Dawid Olejniczah.

The 28-year-old Lahore-based player had won his first-round match 6-3, 7-6 against Josselin Ovanna of France.

Aisam had become the first Pakistan player last year in over twenty years to qualify for the main round of the prestigious championship when he advanced to the second round after winning all his three qualifying-round matches. This year he has teamed up with Rohan Bopanna of India to play in the doubles event.

The duo will face Poland’s Mariusz Fyrenstenberg and Marcin Markowski in the first round.—Agencies
