Bacaradi outclasses rivals to prove her mettle

By Anwar Zuberi

KARACHI, June 22: Four-year-old dark bay filly Bacaradi proved her mettle when she overcame all challengers in a small field of seven runners by landing the supporting event in the Gymkhana race meeting at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday.

Ridden by jockey M. Nasir, she galloped to two-and-a-half lengths victory over co-favourite mare Voo Doo Doll. Manan Prince and Arab Hi Arab occupied the next two places on board in the same order.

Voo Doo Doll with rider Arshad astride was opened favourite when the betting commenced but soon Bacaradi drew attention of punters as she was on job.

The filly from the stables of Shahbaz Younus and trained by Taj Mohammad lived up to the confidence reposed in her by making amends for the previous loss.

However, an eleventh hour change of rider enabled six-year-old bay Bharosa to post an upset two-and-a-half lengths victory over Desert Hawk to claim feature event in addition to making it five on a trot.

Faiz Mohammad who was declared to ride Bharosa was replaced by experienced Ghulam Shabbir II at the last moment.

Favourite colt The Ghazan Prince settled for third place three lengths behind while mare Afroze Jehan completed the board as The Princess Arab was withdrawn.

The KRC racing committee failed to take any action against Desert Hawk by allowing him to compete despite the fact that his entry was stopped for 15 days on last Sunday.

The racing committee should curb double standard and ensure that rules are implemented in letter and spirit.

Long shot three-year-old bay filly Sweet Girl toppled favourite colt Remy Martin, formerly Hinglachi, by two lengths to win honours in top division of class VII.

This was Sweet Girl’s maiden win of the season under rider Arshad.

Speed Of Arab and Baby John occupied third and fourth slots on the board.

Favourite five-year-old chestnut Faith posted a facile eight-and-a-half lengths victory over bay Shah Sawar to land the opener. The victorious horse was piloted home by Tariq Baran. Al Zarrar and Royal Loyalty were not on job.

Joint favourites Jaguar and Lucky Gem claimed honours in the remaining two races.
