Wapda squad off to Malaysia
LAHORE, June 21: Six-time national champions Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) left for Selangor, Malaysia, in the early hours of Saturday to take part in the fourth AFC President’s Cup Qualifiers
Wapda has been placed in Group ‘A’ along with the 2005 AFC President’s Cup winner Regar-TadAZ (Tajikistan), last year’s runner-up Mahendra Police FC (Nepal) and Abahani Krira Chakra, champion of the first-ever Bangladesh Professional Football League.
The matches are to be played at Malaysia’s 25,000-capacity MBPJ Stadium, a multi-use stadium in Petaling Gaya, Selangor.
Wapda have the honour of beating Dordoi in the tournament’s inaugural edition with striker Arif Mehmood scoring the solitary goal at Halchowk Stadium on May 9, 2005.
Stopper Tanveer Ahmed, who led Pakistan in the First Islamic Solidarity Games Football Tournament at Taif and Wapda in the 2005 edition of the AFC President’s Cup, is also among the 12 players retained from the 2005 side along with Muhammad Shahid, Jamshed Anwar, Dilshad Ali, Zulfiqar Ali Shah, Khuda Bakhsh, Arif Mehmood (captain), Adeel Taj, Naveed Akram, Zakir Hussain, Imran Niazi (vice captain), Qamar Zaman as his other team-mates.

June 22: v Tajikistan’s Regar-TadAZ at 6.30pm. June 24: v Nepal’s Mahendra Police Club at 4.00pm. June 26: v Bangladesh’s Abahani Ltd at 4.00pm.—PPI
