HYDERABAD, June 19: District Nazim Kanwar Naveed Jamil has said that from now on the city effluent and waste will not be disposed of into the Phulelli canal — the practice which has been going on since past 60 years.

He said this during an inspection of a 48-inch diversion sewerage discharge pipeline at the Hala Naka, National Highway here on Wednesday.

The disposal of raw sewage into the canal has been causing spread of waterborne diseases among public.

He said that all the city effluent and waste was being disposed of in canals and the Indus River as a result of which a large number of people were suffering from waterborne diseases.

He said that the district government had decided to set up four sewerage treatment plants to protect the Indus and canal waters against pollution.

He said that previously contaminated water of Hyderabad, through Rishi Ghat, Kali Mori and Liaquat Colony drains, was being disposed of in Phulelli canal. According to the new arrangements, all these drains were being linked and diverted to Liaquat Colony pumping station from where the effluent will be removed through 48-inch diameter pipeline to P-1 pumping station.

He said from this pumping station, it will be discharged into northern sewerage treatment plant behind Isra University.

He said 99 per cent work on this project had been completed and the project will be made operational during the current month.
