Baray Lal set to repeat winning act

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, June 17: Five-year-old Baray Lal, who registered his maiden victory a fortnight ago, will be on course in his quest for making it two-in-a-row during the day/night midweek Lahore Gymkhana races at the Racecourse on Wednesday evening.

The bay horse from unknown pedigree, Baray Lal had stunned race-goers by his speed to score career’s first win when he overwhelmed a dozen opponents on June 4. Trained by an upcoming youngster in training profession, Haji Abid Mahmood, Baray Lal has been promoted a division higher in class six.

This time, Baray Lal faces a stiffer opposition in a big field of 14 runners, barring last-minute withdrawals. He may find Polo Lounge and Khan Baba a constant thorn in his bid for victory. This will be the fourth race in racing order.

The sixth and feature event, the Landhi Plate class VI division II has 10 runners. Of them Jewna, Love Minister and Victory King are speedy horses. This should be a good contest between them, particularly the first two named.

Hikmat, Bird Fly and Red Baron are the pick of the 10 runners drawn for the fifth and supporting event, the Landhi Plate, class VI division III and IV combined. They are in good form. Though placed on top of the weight-scales, Hikmat still has an edge over the others if sent to perform on merit.

Sohna Murad, Silent Assassin and Bioactive are the form animals in the third race. They should fight for the spoils in this race comprising a dozen runners, if there are no last-minute withdrawals.

Five-year-old gelding Pure Power failed to show up his power last Wednesday when he was beaten by a superior opponent. He should make amends this time and win the race provided he does not fall a victim to Munir Dar’s mare Pakistani just like previous outing when Polo Lounge snatched victory from him.Twice beaten to second place, the mare Anarkali, will be going all out to salvage her stable pride, by winning the first race. Kundan and Nasir Love are good for places.

A card of six events will be gone through during the meeting. All events will be contested over the sprinting distance of 900 metres. The distance of races has been reduced in view of the hot summer spell.
