HYDERABAD, June 13: District Nazim Kanwar Naveed Jamil has said that necessary arrangements have been made to meet rain emergency situation and a strategy has been evolved to drain out rainwater, even if the rains exceed the unprecedented heavy rains of 2006.

He was speaking at a meeting held at his office here on Friday.

The officials of the Hyderabad Development Authority and other departments concerned, as well as officials of Qasim Rangers, attended the meeting.

The nazim said that the work on sewerage pipelines had been completed and the pumping stations and generators were in working order.

He hoped that rainwater will be drained out within 24 hours.

He said that even in the low-lying areas arrangements had been made.

The nazim pointed out that although the Hyderabad Rural taluka was not within the jurisdiction of Wasa, yet the temporary drains had been constructed and diesel trolley pumps had been installed there to drain out water.

He said that district officer revenue Sajjad Hyder had been appointed as focal person for the rural taluka and a computerised call centre will also become operational within a few days to maintain coordination with all the district government departments.

He said the people living near the Indus River had already been informed that in case of floods, they will be shifted to relief camps which had already been established.

The EDO revenue informed the meeting that an emergency plan had been put in place with regard to the establishment of relief camps and shifting of people of katcha areas to the relief camps.

The director-general of the HDA, the managing director of Wasa and executive engineers of four talukas of the district gave a detailed briefing about Contingency plans.

CONTROL ROOM: Meanwhile, the additional relief commissioner of Hyderabad has notified that an emergency control room has been established in his office in Shahbaz Building for the information of public and to adopt emergency measures in case of rains and floods.

The announcement further said that during normal days, the control room will work from 9am to 10pm, and during rains it will work round the clock.
