KARACHI: Water, power projects

KARACHI, June 8: The Kara-chi Water and Sewerage Board will launch the 150MGD (million gallons per day) water supply project, K-IV, as soon as the project study has been completed.

Announcing this, KWSB managing director Suleman Chandio said that Sindh Minister for Local Government Agha Siraj Durrani would lay the foundation stone of a 35 megawatt power generation unit at Dhabeji pumping station in a few days to avail electricity at a rate much lower than the KESC tariff.

Mr Chandio said that the board’s annual electricity bills amounted to Rs1.75 billion, adding that its 150 major and small pumping stations should be exempted from load-shedding as the power cuts badly affected water supply to the city consumers.

Pointing out that about 300mgd untreated sewer, including industrial waste, was being disposed of into the sea, he said that only 100mgd was being treated at present. He said that a project, S-III, was being initiated to ensure that the entire sewer was treated before disposal.
