Polish foreign minister visits Afghanistan
WARSAW, June 4: Poland’s Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski arrived on Wednesday in Afghanistan, where Warsaw has deployed 1,600 troops in a Nato-led force, the Polish news agency PAP reported.
Citing security grounds, Sikorski’s office refused to comment on the visit, which had not been announced.
PAP said that Sikorski was due to hold talks with Afghan officials.
The Polish troops are serving with Nato’s 40-nation, 50,000-strong International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), which is helping the Afghan government fight Taliban-linked insurgents.
Poland, which is a staunch ally of Washington, first sent troops to Afghanistan in March 2002 in the wake of the US-led overthrow of the Taliban.
Warsaw increased the size of its contingent from around 200 to 1,200 last year, before boosting it again to the current 1,600 last month.—AFP
