LAHORE, June 2: Fancied chestnut horse Alexander produced a scintillating burst of speed to land the feature event during the day/night Lahore Summer Meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday night.

The half-money favourite, ridden by jockey Aamir Pervez, romped to an over two-length victory with Big Power, ridden by riding boy Sajjad Hussain to take second place. Karam Pe Karam finished third while Byron strolled to edge the board.

In all, eight ran for the class VI division III handicap race over 1,100 metres. The winner trained by Sohail Aziz clocked one minute 8 2/5 seconds in this seventh and the last race of the day.

A race earlier, the totally ignored Tyson stormed up in the home stretch to win the supporting and sixth race contested over 1,100 metres. Ridden by riding boy Naseer Ahmed and owned by Mohammad Saeed Butt, Tyson beat the 30 to 100 firm favourite filly, Eve, by a neck on the finishing line. Eve owned by Zaheer Aslam, was carelessly ridden by aging jockey Javed Iqbal, who was not quick to take start and then lagged behind the leaders and paid the price.

Sohail Aziz and Haji Abid Hussain excelled among the trainers when each brought home a brace of winners. The former sent out Chinkara and Alexander in the fourth and seventh race while the latter saddled Quantico and Will He Wish in the third and fifth race, respectively.

Jockey Shahid Rehman distinguished himself in the saddle. He rode home three winners, Quantico, Chinkara and Will He Wish in the third, fourth and fifth race.

The Lahore Race Club (LRC) stewards at last came down hard on trainer Zia-ur-Rehman for sending out his colt Best Owner in unfit condition to contest in the first race and fined him Rs10,000.

Prior to the race the stewards announced change of rider on the colt as it was being suspected of the colt not on tryout but later they withdrew their order on trainer’s assurance that the colt will perform truly.

Zia thus succeeded to hoodwink every one and make easy money. The result was evident as the colt finished off the frame. Zia is very well known for such tactics but he had escaped every time in the past.

In the second race, the stewards suspended the license of riding boy Anjum for six months and subsequently fined him Rs20,000 for pulling bay horse Naseeb Apna Apna, who could hardly appear on the board.

Sunday’s races were attended by LRC chairman, Tariq Aziz. He told Dawn that he arrived in the city on Saturday and had a meeting in the LRC to review its fiscal year progress, expenditure and income. The LRC secretary Shahzad Akhtar and other officials were also present.
