Germany players hit with random drugs test

FRANKFURT, May 31: Ten members of Germany’s Euro 2008 squad were randomly drugs-tested on Friday night, the German Football Federation (DFB) announced here on Saturday.

The Germany squad flew into Frankfurt on Friday from their Mallorca training camp to prepare for Saturday night’s final Euro 2008 friendly against Serbia in Gelsenkirchen.

Under UEFA regulations, ten of the 23-man squad were tested at random and the results will be known in the next few days, said a DFB spokesman.

“We have every confidence in our players, regular drugs testing by us and in the clubs show there is no problems,” said DFB team doctor Tim Meyer.

Of the 16 teams who have qualified for Euro 2008, hosted by Austria and Switzerland, a total of 160 players, ten per team, will be drugs tested before the tournament starts next Saturday.

A further 124 players will be tested during the June 7-29 competition.—AFP
